The town was organized in September 1880 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad to serve the San Juan mining district. The city is named after Durango, Mexico.
Durango is nestled in the Animas River Valley surrounded by the San Juan Mountains. The Animas River - El Rio de las Animas Perdidas or the River of Lost Souls - runs through downtown and boasts gold medal fly-fishing waters, as well as, whitewater rafting, kayaking and canoeing. |

Durango is a small bustling western town with lots of little restaurants specializing in Southwestern style cooking with input from the world - Texas (bar b que), Mexican, Asian, and of course French. |

The Animas Museum
"Where the Past Touches the Future"Is owned and operated by the La Plata County Historical Society. It's a great place to find photos and information about the the wild west in the 1800s
